The basic ethos of the garden revolves around the principle that native and wild plants are the residents and cultivated species are the visiting immigrants. If a plant thrives so be it. However if it proves difficult to grow we choose another!
This seems to provide a respectable balance between wild and cultivated, tidy and random, and architectural and free. The lack of formality also increases the functionality of the spaces. On a quiet summer evening you may like to take a bottle of wine into the garden and watch the sun set or the bats leaving their roost, while listening to the peacocks in the valley.
The garden is a haven for wildlife, reflecting the eco-friendly farmland surrounding it. Badgers frequently come into the garden at night and grub up worms or roll on favourite plants! Needless to say our domestic cats get all the blame!
